NAP Users Multimodal Forum – Proceedings

On the 8th of October, the first-ever NAP Users Multimodal Forum took place, highlighting the value of National Access Points (NAPs) as a key data source for applications such as journey planners. The event comprised three distinct sessions.

You can download the Agenda here.

Session 1 (9:00 –10:35 CET): Framework – Informative session

Session 1 was designed for newcomers to the NAP ecosystem seeking to understand its scope and origins. A key highlight was a presentation by Victoire Champenois from DG MOVE (European Commission), followed by a Q&A session addressing questions on multimodal legislation. A fruitful discussion took place regarding greenhouse gas emissions as referenced in the proposed Regulation on multimodal booking specifically concerning the ranking of search options on ticketing platforms and other multimodal services. NAP data will play a critical role in implementing these future regulatory requirements.

The presentations delivered during this session included the following:

Session 2(10:45 –12:15 CET): Presentation of use-cases – Inspirational session

The second session focused on the usability of NAP data through the following key use-cases:

  • Presentations of Multimodal travel information services:
    • MOTIS, Felix Gündling
Showcasing a community-run, provider-neutral international public transport routing service powered by open data. Here is a demo of Transitous (which uses MOTIS and NAP data across the planet).
    • Matkahuolto, Tuomo Kinnunen
Demonstrating a ticketing application that covers all public transport in Finland to enable seamless intermodal travel, along with insights from the Nemu project for cross-border journeys across the Nordics.
    • Slim naar Antwerpen, Stijn Vernaillen, City of Antwerp
Providing a cross-border journey planner that highlights sustainable transport modes, distributes traffic during peak periods, and guides users toward alternative transport options.
  • Presentation of a research use-case:
    • Transport Poverty Hub, Alessandro Giordano, European Commission, JRC-C6
Researching the connectivity of geographical areas based on mobility options and time schedules.

These use-cases illustrate how mobility data accessible via NAPs can inspire future applications.

Session 3 (14:00 – 15:30 CET): What can NAPs and NAPCORE do for you? – Interactive session

The final session presented an overview of the NAP user survey conducted earlier this year regarding user experience and data usage. To continuously enhance NAP operations and act upon feedback, thematic teams have been established across various transport modes and multimodal routing services. These teams facilitate direct contact with stakeholder ecosystems through workshops, ensuring feedback is routed directly to the relevant NAPCORE teams. The thematic teams were introduced during a panel discussion held at the conclusion of the event.

The event brought together over 90 participants from 24 countries, demonstrating strong interest across the mobility ecosystem for this inaugural edition.
